Luebeck – Eine wunderschoene Stadt!

Today we got to visit the beautiful city of Luebeck. Nestled along the river Elbe, we had a wonderful tour guide, who showed us how this sleepy medieval town was once the heartbeat of northern Europe in terms of trade.

During our walk, we got to see Germany’s answer to the Leaning tower of Pisa, we had a chat with Johannes Brahms and we got to sample some local Marzipan, for which Luebeck is famous.

The students seemed to really enjoy themselves and it’s such a pleasure to hear them speaking german among themselves, with their teachers or with members of the public.

We are heading into the last weekend of the journey and i can feel a slight pang of sadness among the group; a wonderful journey’s end is near and reality awaits.

The island of Foehr

By now in sure you have heard that one of our students, Patrick Gianni, broke his arm on the cycling tour of the island, Foehr. I would just like to assure everybody that it was a very simple accident and that Patrick is making a full recovery with his host parents.

The trip to Foehr was certainly a highlight for the students. We travelled 3hours north west and jumped on a ferry across to the island. We had sensational weather and had a glorious cycle around the island, led by our German counterparts, Gaby and Kay.

We then lay on a beach before dividing up the group into two teams for a game of soccer… Not before both sets of students sang their national anthems (in keeping with World Cup tradition)

Whilst the bicycle accident was a downer at the end of the day,it shoddy take away from what had been a glorious bike tour around a stunningly beautiful island. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next few days excursions!

Feel free to comment on this blog and leave any messages of goodwill you wish!

In der Schule

The Students have homegroup with Sophie and I every morning – this is where we discuss new words and phrases, do some German lessons and plenty of role plays.
Whilst the German tour has had so many amazing highlights so far, Sophie and I both agree that the absolute best thing about the trip so far has been the willingness of our students to immerse themselves in the German language and throw themselves into situations where they have to speak German. If only all German classes could be like this!!

Out German host teacher, Annette has been so generous with her Hume and has also run some lessons on German culture and history.

Whilst German classes at UHS are great, there really is no substitute for the real German experience.

Keep up the great work, guys and girls!
